Update From Last Year’s Annual Report on Building a Smokefree Future for All
2024 Annual Report Success
The 2025 Director of Public Health Annual Report focused on what we can all do to reduce the harm from tobacco and stop the start.
We were delighted that this report was selected by the Association of the Directors of Public Health as an eye-catching report in their annual report celebration.
Below are the key updates on our actions to become smoke-free in Derbyshire:
Work Together to Inspire Change
All partners sign up to the smokefree 2030 vision
Key partners across the Derbyshire ICS have committed to supporting the Smokefree 2030 vision and work collectively to agree it.
Develop a system-wide tobacco control plan with measurable targets
We have an action plan for each of the operational groups and work is ongoing to develop measurable targets through 25/26.
Engage with our communities to shape our smokefree future
We are engaging with our communities in collaboration with Healthwatch Derbyshire, with specific work with high smoking groups for example social housing residents and routine and manual workers. We have also worked with the Derbyshire BME Forum to engage our BME communities.
Do All We Can to "Stop the Start"
De-normalise smoking through clear messaging about the harm caused by tobacco
We are running 4 large campaigns in 2025 jointly with Derby city, the first of which was aimed at the general smoking population and was launched on national no smoking day [12 March 2025] along with the new Smokefree Derby and Derbyshire website. We are seeing an increase in uptake to our stop smoking services. NHS partners are helping to shape and share the messages for example through displaying the posters on GP practice screens.
Create more smokefree environments
We are developing a new 'pledge' scheme to encourage and support organisations across Derby and Derbyshire to become smokefree. This will denormalise smoking to discourage take up, encourage quit attempts and support those trying to quit. We have also created a Smokefree Places Guide that provides practical guidance for organisations.
Support Every Smoker to Quit and Stay Smokefree
Further understand the lived experience of people who smoke
We are working with Healthwatch Derbyshire and Derbyshire BME Forum to do insight work to further understand this issue.
Increase awareness of the support available to help quit smoking
4 large scale campaigns and new branding/website will promote services and drive demand into local stop smoking services.
Make it as easy as possible for smokers to quit
A range of approaches have been developed to make accessing services even easier e.g. swap to stop, outreach, smokefree app- and these will be promoted through new and existing channels.
Progress Overview
Excellent progress has been made across our three key priority areas for building a smokefree future. We've successfully launched major campaigns, engaged communities, and made services more accessible while continuing to develop our system-wide approach.
